This holiday season, the Walker Art Center carries on its 28-year tradition as host to the British Arrows Awards.
With autumn comes the start of the season for serious-minded movies, and the Twin Cities Film Fest just announced a slate that includes more than just a few movies that have awards bloggers all hot and bothered.
The Minnesota Twins will have an Oscar-nominated actor toss out at the ceremonial first pitch at their 2014 home opener. Barkhad Abdi will throw out the first pitch at the April 7 game against Oakland at Target Field. After the first pitch, Abdi will meet fans in the new Twins Digital Clubhouse in the U.S. Bank Homerun Porch.
It hasn’t been a great week for former Minneapolis cab driver turned movie star Barkhad Abdi. First he lost the Academy Award, and now a new report says Abdi is “dead broke.” According to the New Yorker, Abdi only made $65,000 from his role as the Somali pirate leader in “Captain Phillips.”
The thing about throwing an Oscar party — even an impromptu, informal one — is that it’s really tough to actually keep track of the show itself, what with making the cocktails and distributing the ballots and tipping the pizza delivery person.

Barkhad Abdi, the Somali immigrant who was a Twin Cities limo driver before playing a pirate in “Captain Phillips,” won an award at the British Academy Awards over the weekend. Abdi was named best supporting actor, edging Michael Fassbender in “12 Years a Slave” and Bradley Cooper in “American Hustle.”
For the last few years, I’ve pointed out that winning your Oscar pool in some ways depends on being smart about your selections in the short film categories. That everyone usually has a pretty solid idea of what’s going to win in the major races is mostly a given. Down ballot? A whole ‘nother ball game.
