Appeals Court Orders New Trial For St. Paul Priest

The Minnesota Court of Appeals on Monday reversed a sexual misconduct conviction and ordered a new trial for a St. Paul priest accused of having sex with a woman who was seeking his spiritual advice. The 22-page ruling said the lower court made several errors during Christopher Wenthe’s trial. Wenthe was convicted in 2011 of third-degree criminal sexual conduct after a woman reported the sexual conduct.

Diocese: Former Blue Earth Priest To Be Deported

A Minnesota priest was taken into custody at his Monday sentencing and will be deported after admitting he fondled a girl while attending dinner at her grandmother’s home.

The Diocese of Winona says The Rev. Leo Koppala was taken into custody by the Department of Homeland Security after his sentencing hearing Monday and will be held until his deportation proceedings.

Archbishop Nienstedt Won’t Be Charged In Alleged Groping Incident

Charges will not be filed against Archbishop John Nienstedt in connection with a police report filed by a priest on Dec.16, 2013. According to the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office, St. Paul Police conducted an “extensive investigation” surrounding the allegation that Nienstedt inappropriately touched a boy during a photo session at a confirmation ceremony at the Cathedral of Saint Paul on May 5, 2009.

Teen Molested By Priest Sues Archdiocese

A teenage boy who was molested by the Rev. Curtis Wehmeyer from 2008 through 2011 sued the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis on Thursday, alleging it conspired to protect the priest from criminal prosecution and conceal his history of sexual misconduct from the public. The lawsuit comes one day after Ramsey County prosecutors said they wouldn’t charge members of the archdiocese for the way they handled allegations against Wehmeyer because there was insufficient evidence to prove anyone failed to immediately report the abuse. Wehmeyer pleaded guilty in 2012 and is serving a five-year prison sentence.

Prosecutor Won’t Charge Priest With Child Porn

A prosecutor has declined to charge a priest accused of possessing potential child pornography. Washington County Attorney Pete Orput said Wednesday that investigators found no evidence of a crime when they examined computer files that once belonged to the Rev. John Shelley.

Priest Accused of Molestation Suspended As Sex Ed Teacher

A former priest, accused of molesting two children decades ago, has been suspended from teaching sex education for Wright County. The county board recently canceled their contract with 79-year-old Harry Walsh. Walsh was one of five priests named in an internal archdiocese memo about parishes with “some connection to a history of clergy sexual abuse.”

A Minnesota man who says he was abused by a priest on the White Earth Indian Reservation sued the Diocese of Crookston and the priest’s religious order on Thursday, claiming they should have known the priest was a risk.
