For middle-of-the-pack programs like Minnesota, the Big Ten schedule is always daunting. Well, the Gophers have rarely seen a stretch like the one they’re about to begin. Four Big Ten teams are ranked in the top 20, including three in the top five, of the Associated Press poll. Those four teams also happen to be Minnesota’s next four opponents. The Gophers play at No. 5 Michigan State on Saturday. They host No. 3 Ohio State next Thursday. They travel to No. 20 Iowa for a game on Jan. 19. They have No. 4 Wisconsin visiting on Jan. 22.

It’s a unique time for boys high school basketball in Minnesota as the in-state talent seems to get more elite every year. I’m not sure it will ever get to the level that’s out on the east coast, but the brand that’s on display right now on courts throughout the state might be the strongest it’s ever been.

It was another eventful year in local sports with three local professional teams making the playoffs, a high profile coach getting dismissed and a football team having a turnaround season.
Richard Pitino will recognize the coach down the sideline next season when the Gophers men’s basketball team opens its 2014-15 regular season.
