A string of armed robberies near the University of Minnesota has police urging students to pay close attention to their surroundings, especially in the nearby neighborhoods of Dinkytown and Marcy Holmes.
U of M police issued a crime alert on Monday, describing two robberies that took place close to campus over the weekend. Investigators said they appear to be similar to four other robberies that happened in the past month — those were also close to the U. Some of the victims are students and some aren’t.

The Hastings man arrested for allegedly robbing a gas station at knife-point before fleeing on a “light colored kids bike” was charged with felony first-degree aggravated robbery. According to the charges, Joseph Robert Olson, 27, robbed the gas station on Vermillion Street at 5:08 a.m. on May 22 while wielding a 4-inch knife. Surveillance video helped police identify Olson.
Two people are under arrest after a dramatic convenience store robbery in Hastings was caught on tape. WCCO-TV showed surveillance video of the robbery Wednesday night. The video captured a man armed with a knife demanding cash from the registers.
A 30-year-old man has been charged with breaking into multiple homes in Northfield, burgling the residences and killing three dogs. According to the criminal complaint, police were called to the home on the 700 block of College Street just after noon on May 8.
