Dara Moskowitz Grumdahl's Top 5 Blueberry Recipes

There are not enough good things to say about blueberries: They're antioxidant packed superfoods, they're a native American plant that supports wild pollinators like bumblebees and butterflies, they are supremely delicious. And they're in season! Pint after pint of them are lined up at the farmer's market, and they're in every store. But what else can you do with them besides pop them into your mouth by the handful? Plenty! Like these, my top five:

Rose Levy Berenbaum's Fresh Blueberry Pie

Rose Levy Berenbaum is one of the great pastry geniuses of our age, and her way of cooking a cup of blueberries with sugar and cornstarch into a syrup and then uniting fresh blueberries with that syrup -- it's just so smart. What a great way to get as many beautiful blueberries into your life as possible. Granted, it's a little tough to cut, but it's worth it! And it wouldn't be summer if you weren't sticky with blueberries, would it be? It would not.

Gale Gand's Double Blueberry Muffin Recipe

To me, nothing says summer like breakfast on the picnic table outside with fresh blueberry muffins. The very best I've ever had are these ones Gale Gand invented, with double blueberries in the batter — one tip, definitely use paper muffin tin liners, there are so many blueberries here things can get a little sticky.

Blueberry Margarita

You can make just about any summer drink blueberry-ific by muddling a few blueberries in the bottom of a glass before you start and tossing a few up top for garnish when you're done—blueberry Tom Collins, blueberry Mojito, blueberry lemonade. But a blueberry margarita is something special—so summery.

Blueberry aspic

This is a weird one for you foodies in the crowd but, I had real blueberry aspic in a restaurant once and it was amazing!  Blueberry aspic of course is blueberry Jell-O made from real blueberries and sheets of unflavored gelatin, and it's fussy but also a very nice do-ahead dessert for a fancy dinner party, and everyone will be so surprised and pleased.

James Beard's Blueberry Clafoutis

Clafoutis is a crustless dessert, halfway between a cake and a custard, and it's one of the most delicious things in the world. James Beard's own clafoutis recipe is dead easy—and nothing short of stunning.
