WASHINGTON (AP) — The top White House economic adviser is warning against what he calls “playing chicken” with the need to raise the nation’s debt ceiling, but Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota is asking people to sign an online petition to urge their representatives not to increase the debt limit.

For some conservatives, refusing to raise the limit on the federal debt would be a tactic to force the government into cutting spending.

Last February, Congress raised the debt ceiling to $14.3 trillion. The debt is now at nearly $13.9 trillion and growing daily. A move to raise the ceiling again is expected this spring.

The chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, Austan Goolsbee, says the impact on the economy of refusing to raise the ceiling would be “catastrophic.”

      1. David says:

yeah all those people in the towers should just die in vain right?? Back in the closet toby, freedom isn’t free, we’ll pay your share.

      2. John Peterson says:

omg let it go – STOP SPENDING..

i do feel safer fighting the crazies over there than on U.S. territory

      3. Kieron says:

“In vain”? Those people died because of lies our government told, not “in vain.” Maybe the closet you need to excavate is your own, David. What kool-aid are you drinking?

      4. Really? says:

Good thing your boy Obama Bin Lying has increased the wars!!! Way to go dirty dems!!

  2. MrB says:

Bachmann is a complete idiot. Thank God she doesn’t represent my distict, bad enough she’s from MN!

    1. John Peterson says:

seems like a noble cause to not spend money we do not have – how do you manage your checkbook?

    2. Really? says:

Obama is a complete idiot! I wish I could say he doesn’t represent me!! Dirty liar!! Bad enough he’s from Kenya!!

    3. Tom says:

MrB go get a job and support yourself without the government supporting you with my TAX dollars idiot.

  3. richard says:

She’s an embarrasment to the state and to the practice of common sense and reasonabilness.

    1. richard says:

Learn how to spell fool!! You’re the embarrassment!!

  4. Mike Hunt says:

I hope they take a good look at the “names” that show up on her petition. Hahahahahahaha!

    1. richard says:

You mean like the voters who voted for Frankenstein? You dirty dems have a short memory!!!

    2. Tom says:

Mine is there, and proudly so. Just so NO to SOCIALISM.

  5. MrC says:

You are right MrB. Why should the government have any spending limits? Let me guess….you are one of the 47% that didn’t pay any federal taxes in ’10? Lucky for you, there are reps like Michele Bachmann protecting your right to free speech.

    1. dunnski57 says:

“Conservatives” love to use that 47% figure. But who is that 47%? The Congressional Budget Office has identified the majority of those people as being the elderly in nursing homes, people who rely on Social Security as their only income, physically and mentally handicapped people and those who earn less than $20, 000 a year and wealthy people who use every loophole and foreign bank deposit they can. Which of these do you propose to tax the crap out of???

      1. John Peterson says:

so you agree with the 47% – what is your point?

    2. Bob says:

    3. Ignorance must be bliss says:

Where and when is she protecting free speeach? Do people even think before posting on this?

  6. Flyers4n says:

The GOP is full of idiots and hypocrites!

  7. kathy says:

Interesting that AFTER she gets the extension of the tax cuts for the wealthy that increase the defecit by billions she all of a sudden wants people to sign peititions regarding debt? You kno what that means..cut the police…cut the fire…anything that doesn’t touch the rich! What a bimbo and embarassment to Minnesota she is

    1. John Peterson says:

what is enough for you? – why should people who work hard have to pay for everything.

      1. ellen says:

Because we are paying for everything. I don’t make over 250,000 dollars a year. Even with a combined income. What is enough for me is for anyone making 500,000 dollars a year to pay their fair share, we have been paying for them for too long. Give tax breaks to the rich so they can create jobs, I don’t know about you but I don’t live in a third world country, and I don’t want a job paying 2.50 an hour if that. BATHROOM BREAK BOSS.

      2. Ignorance must be bliss says:

        John Peterson
So are we to believe that you are stating that people who do not make $100k + a year are not working hard? I hope you do not have to face the people who on a daily basis work for you (if you know it or not) that makes your life possible. So from now on because “they do not work hard” you can take your own garbage to the dump, make all of your own meals, hunt your own food and so on. What an IGNORANT comment to make that only rich people work hard. You must be a trust fund baby.

    2. Tom says:

The police are not there to protect you, takes average 8 minutes from intitial 911 call for them to show up. Buy and gun and keep it close to hand, you are responsible for protecting yourself.

  8. Murph says:

Michele seems to need a little attitude adjustment.Or maybe just some more,a lot more, of the drugs she is taking! I always get hungry for fruitloops when I see her face! Or listen to Pawlenty speak.

  9. Alert U says:

Their plan is to eventually kill Social Security and Medicare. Then move on to disband the Dept of Education, FEMA, The EPA all the way up to privatize the military. These people, led by Paul Ryan, DeMint and this ilk are dead serious; backed up with massive recent sales of guns and ammo they are on a momentum now (the Sharon Angle 2nd Amendment remedy ideology) to achieve this end. They are continuously selling their Subjective Value of Less Government by convincing people this is what the Constitution really means. They are suggesting the Founding Fathers never really intended for us to have a government. They believe America is all about ‘individual freedom’. These folks actually hope America can become a sanctified version of Somalia.
It is deep regret Barrack Obama is the trigger which set this off!!!

    1. Tom says:

I don’t regret it, someone somewhere had to set it off, so NO to SOCIALSIM>

  10. Bob says:

Like I said She couldnt quiet for too much longer…

  11. Murph says:

Less government should overwhelmingly supported by the population ..IF it mean’t ONE representative per State of the Union and no more excuses for all these census related add-onns.One bloodsucker sellout is one too many! Today it is like a horror movie! Zombies and werewolves almost all!, Bachmann most assuredly!

  12. MrB says:

MrC…freedom of speech should be taken away from Bachmann, she abuses that right……and oh by the way, I did pay my share of fed taxes in 2010!

  13. Dave K says:

It never ceases to amaze me that so many pay attention to what this windbag says. The more outrageous and uninformed her comments the more national publicity she gets It doesn’t bode well for this country that people like her get taken seriously. Michelle lets see your balanced budget proposal.

    1. Pam Nevers says:

She is most definitely all talk. The woman should have never been re-elected.

    2. Tom says:

She is better the Pelosi by far.

  14. mark from mntaxwaste.com says:

Thank you Bachman great job! Enough with the tax end spend!

    1. helper says:

      Your an idiot mark!

      1. Tom says:

And helper you are the biggest idiot, you are probably living off of us hardworking taxpayers with your government check.

  15. Advo says:

    Let one thing be clear:

Anyone who supports not raising the debt ceiling knows NOTHING about economics.

Not doing so is the economic equivalent of suicide. It would cause the United States to default on all of its debts, and would destroy our fragile economy.

This is why conservative and liberal economists are completely together on the issue.

Not raising the debt ceiling is a jackass idea, supported primarily by those who don’t know any better and just think it sounds good.

    1. smarter than a 5th grader says:

When do you stop raising the debt? When it goes over 100 Trillion?
No, You are wrong advo. Stopping to take heroin is not suicide.
      Your one more shot is!!

      1. ellen says:

Oh so smarter than a 5th grader your now in sixth grade and can make change from a dollar. Let’s remember what party brought us to this new party. Does Bush come to mind.

      2. smarter than a 5th grader says:

Ellen, you/we are in serious trouble here. Our debt is so great it is impossible to ever repay… the only way and what we are doing now is flooding the world with our paper dollars/promises to pay our debt.. in other words slowly destroying our currency. It is the same fate of every fiat currency ever to exist. Can you imagine how your life is going to change when the dollar and our economy collapse? It amazes me that people can think that creating dollars out of thin air and going further into debt is going to help anything. We are all in a boat that is full of holes and sinking fast……. you can 1. poke more holes by increasing the debt… 2. point your finger to blame someone if it makes you feel good. or 3. put your finger in one of the holes and help save what we can of our great country.

    2. Tom says:

My family lives on cash, not credit, the government can do the same thing without printing more cash.

    3. www.americanskeptic.com says:

      This is ridiculous.

The debt ceiling is already at 14.3 trillion. The current US debt is at just under 14 trillion and rising.

The argument is about whether to increase the debt limit or not.
The argument is NOT about whether to reduce the debt limit to $0.

So, to claim that not increasing the debt limit would cause the US to “Default on all of its debts” and would “destroy our fragile economy” is really ridiculous. You are just regurgitating the doomsday scenario that is being given to you by the Democrats.

Obama himself was very persuasive on the issue in 2006 when he argued against raising the debt limit.

If the debt limit is not increased, spending would have to be cut – immediately. Debtors would be paid (within the boundaries of the current debt limit), some discretionary programs would be de-funded and/or the Federal Reserve would simply print more money as they are known to do.

  16. PED Coon Rapids says:

I agree with Mrs. Bachmann! Too many folks who are calling the shots in gov’t — whether it’s local or national — do NOT know how to scrimp and save! They throw WAY too much money at too many problems.
    Good for YOU, Representative Bachmann!

    1. helper says:

      Another idiot from Coon Rapids!

  17. Allah Is Coming To Town says:

    She makes my jammies jump!!!!!!!

  18. Pavel says:

    This woman is a dullard!

  19. Papa K says:

Michelle … Your comments are reckless.  The 2010 election was about (the House, Senate and President) working together.   If you don’t change, I doubt you will win a state wide election.

  20. Reality Check says:

I hear they hire professionals to come on these sites and muddy up the water so things are unclear and confusing. United States use to be a world power. Time to face reality and rein in our resources cause we have over extended ourselves. Is that so hard to understand? We don’t have the money any more so lets stop giving it away over seas! Geesh… and I am only a simple house wife. It does not take a rocket scientist to understand that!

    1. Who's Blind? says:

BTW wouldn’t you know it! You have to give money before you can sign the petition! Makes me sick!

      1. Minnie says:

Apparently, it is you who is “blind.” AFTER you sign the petition, the next screen thanks you for signing, THEN asks if you will give money to help support their efforts. It is NOT required to give anything to sign.

      2. Web site says:

What is the web address to get to the site to sign the petition?

  21. Blemmons says:

Thanks Michelle for being sensible. I can’t even believe some of the comments out here. People calling each other names – who are you? If you are cutting Michelle and then cutting each other I would think you would be embarrassed and ashamed. Very classy. I agree you have a right to your opinions but it looks like I am viewing children arguing. In any event, I believe we should only spend what we have, isn’t that what we were taught? I know that doesn’t apply to everything and the government does need to borrow but it shouldn’t have free reign to cap it at whatever they want. I do not want my children to have to deal with this mess. Also, the person who thinks that if an individual makes more than $500,000 then they should pay more than him – I’m pretty sure that someone making that kind of money is paying more. Why should someone that makes less than that be entitled to some of the person’s money that makes more. I would think you would be ashamed – isn’t that like getting a free hand out. My parents taught me to work for my money – then my money is mine, end of story.

    1. jas says:

Very well put. I can relate to most of your statements. The name calling is pretty annoying also.

  22. tish says:

helper…. stop calling people idiots that is not a comment about the news artical!and get a job and get off what ever social handout you are receiving…

  23. dunnski57 says:

Houston Control to Muchele Bachman. Come in Bachman. Houston Control to Michele Bachman. Reality check required. Oh, that’s right – you represent Anoka County- bastion of millionaires who will rescue the economy.

  24. Anthony Treglia says:

Amazing how people think it’s ok for the government to have no spending limits. How do they run their households? Do they just charge all on their credit cards of do they spend to the limit of what they make? Remember that sooner or later you will have to pay it back. HOW?

  25. Dick says:

The Obama spending spree needs to come to an end, he is a lier. We can’t spend our way out of this, dident he prove that already.

  26. Jason woron says:

-During Bush Presidency the republicans in congress voted 19 TIMES to raise debt ceiling.
-The Debt Ceiling is paying for money already spent and current bills….NOTHING to do with future spending increases
