MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — This weekend, thousands of people will be swinging hammers and pounding nails for a good cause.

This Saturday is National Rebuilding Day, where volunteers help to fix up homes for people who otherwise couldn’t afford it.

The effort comes through the nonprofit group Rebuilding Together, whose mission statement advocates “a safe and healthy home for every person.”

Crews are going to work on 15 Minneapolis homes in this year’s program, involving 200 volunteer workers.

One of those homes belongs to Iris Hodges. She told Kerry McNally she has been living in her home for 15 years.

Recently, the roof started leaking, so one of the partners of Rebuilding Together, Select Evergreen, will be pitching in to help fix the roof.

“I thank God that Rebuilding Together is here to help me with this,” said Hodges.

Volunteers or people looking to donate to the cause can visit this website.

Hopefully Hodges removes those ice damns next year so it doesn’t happen again.

Do we gain experience or skills?

I would love to volunteer if I get the opportunity to learn too.

Shouldn’t these people be looking to sell their houses? If you can’t afford to maintain your house, you can’t afford your house. This is why we have tons of slum neighborhoods in MSP. Build more apartments in the suburbs and ship them out.

And people like you would be rushing to City Hall screaming “not in my backyard!”

It’s no always that easy to sell a run-down house in this economy. Short sales are tough, even for “nice” houses in “good” neighborhoods. And who would pay $100,000 for a house because that’s what the owner still owes the bank, when they can buy the foreclosure next door for $35,000?

Why would it bother you if she getting a roof fixed..Do you want to pay about 9,000 to fix it for her ..if not quit worrying about other people and what they chose to do to their homes. Don’t you think if she’s getting her home fixed she want to look nice
