MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota’s Ralph Sampson III is among 89 players who filed as early entry candidates for this year’s NBA draft.

The league released the list on Thursday. It includes 69 players from U.S. colleges and 20 international players.

Sampson’s move is more procedural, though, to see whether he’s ready for the NBA through the scouting process. Gophers spokesman Matt Slieter says Sampson hasn’t signed with an agent and is expected to withdraw by the June 13 deadline and return to Minnesota for his senior season. The NBA draft is June 23.

The 6-foot-11 Sampson averaged 10.2 points and 5.4 rebounds last season. He’s the son of former NBA player Ralph Sampson.

Gophers coach Tubby Smith said last week he thought Sampson has a lot of room for improvement.

    Is it still April 1?

Sampson is terrible against Big Ten competition. How does he think he is ready for the NBA? He must be getting advice from Ndudi Ebi.

      lol or me

he must be entering the israeli basketball super league’s draft…. hahahaha, cause he can’t even hack it in the big 10…

I’m confused. Don’t you actually have to show some talent in college before you could be considered in the NBA Draft. He’ll follow the path of Rick Rickert I’m sure.

  5. msche says:

Maybe he just wants to let the NBA know he is interested because his time on the court hasn’t shown any desire to even play college ball.

    1. Yep you are not ready says:

      excellent point

  6. Please Don't Go says:

I would venture to say that the royal wedding was more exciting (and more intimidating) than Mr. Sampson……..do college players get checked for smoking weed…..just asking

  7. Look Mom, No Brains says:

Watch for Glen Taylor to make an under the table play to lock up Mr. Sampson for the Timberwolves…..Remember they are only 5 really good players short of being a good team.

  8. If Brains Don't Make You Rich, How Do Some People Do It says:

Usually I don’t like to rip college & high school players, but this is ridiculous. Sid Hartman (who by the way said the Vikings absolutely would not take a quarterback with their first pick) has as much chance of playing in the NBA.

  9. Johnny Rain Cloud says:

He should sign an agent and that way he can’t play for the gophers.
