Pawlenty To Debate Tonight In South Carolina

By Edgar Linares, NewsRadio 830 WCCO

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- On Thursday night, presidential hopeful and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty will debate in Greenville, S.C. It's the first primary Republican debate before the GOP primary.

Others potential candidates participating include Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson and businessman Herman Cain.

Political science Professor David Schultz from Hamline University said the debate could help Pawlenty.

"It would help him a lot if he did very well," said Schultz. "Right now the members of the Republican party are very unsettled that there's no clear front runner accept maybe Mitt Romney."

Schultz said Pawlenty is not well known and this debate could help him stand out.

"There's a big demand among Republicans for a new face to emerge," said Schultz. "He has a great opportunity of being able to sort of carve a space for himself. So this is pretty big for him."

The debate will be hosted by Fox News and Bret Baier will moderate.
