PLYMOUTH, Minn. (WCCO) — An Islamic Community Center is one step closer to moving into a Plymouth neighborhood, but not everyone in town is happy about it.

A downtown Plymouth post office doesn’t use most of the space in their building and it’s for sale. So, the Northwest Islamic Community Center made an offer to buy it.

That move brought a rare crowd into the Plymouth Planning Commission meeting Wednesday night.

It’s because the Islamic group would like to share the building with the post office, leasing it back for rent, which means prayer services and postal services would be in the same building.

During a public hearing on whether the building should be used for religious purposes, citizens sent strong messages — on both sides.

“Aiding the enemy is treason,” said one man opposed to the center.

“Those who are, you know, do not understand the religion, they are a small minority,” said a man in favor of the center. “I hope we can reach out to them, and I hope they can come visit us and know us in person.”

The Planning Commission gave unanimous approval for a conditional-use permit, which they believe can be used for religious reasons. They called it a win for both the Islamic center and the post office, which needed to sell the space.

The City Council will make the final decision next week.

Islam is not a race-it is a manmade religion. Any one of us could easily demonstrate this fact (along with Judaism, Christianity, Mormonism, etc) by the simple act of converting to this ideology. Further, I readily concede that not all Muslims are radical-anymore than all Christians are radical. But we cannot ignore that it is the religion itself that perpetuates and teaches doctrines and ideas (martyrdom, misogyny, contempt for secularism, the killing of apostates, etc) that jeopardize society. In this regard Islam should be critically examined (and not given a free pass simply because it is a religion) as we would any ideology. No one here has any hesitation about criticizing Marxism, Stalinism, Nazism, the White Supremacy Movement, etc. The clear distinction between these and Islam is merely that the latter is regarded as a faith and therefore we show deference to these ideas on this basis alone. It is never dangerous to question and investigate an idea or ideology-the danger resides in silent complicity or the tendency to rationalize intolerance and hatred. Peace.

    1. See BS says:

Shouldn’t this property be put up for public auction? If the Muslim Community people buy the property — they have ever right to lease it out to the post office.

But imagine if a Church was allowed to open a post office on their property? You think someone will have a problem with a Catholic Church leasing out part of their building to a post office?

I’m calling Nerdy White Liberals “Brownie nosed Racists”, because they are always throwing non-nerdy-white-liberal people and christians under the bus for brownie points with minorities.

      1. Equality for All says:

I am a proud “Nerdy White Liberal,” and I would have no problem with the Catholic Church or any other religious or nonreligious group renting out this space. It should go to the highest bidder, and no one should be excluded for religious reasons. And I resent the idea that you seem to think “white liberals” are trying to score points with minorities. I support FAIRNESS AND EQUALITY for everyone, including minorities, when unfortunately in this country, minorities (ethnic, religious, lifestyle, and all other minorities) are often subjected to unfair and biased treatment, this being a prime example. Perhaps you could explain how you came up with that ridiculous statement?

      2. THINK FOR ONCE says:

Would YOU like an extremist group with current day FANATICS willing to kill people who aren’t Muslim, have keys to the building with YOUR MAIL???

        THINK PEOPLE!!! THINK!!!

    2. Mike says:

Get on YouTube and search ” Sweden Muslim Problem ” … they are in a state of crisis… once a peaceful country. That has changed with the Muslim Refugees they took in. Now Swedish Racist Hate Groups have formed… it’s pretty sad.

  3. Just me says:

    Paranoid much guys?

The Muslims are already in Plymouth, that’s why they want an Islamic center there. Those of you thinking they are going to have bomb making parties, well they could do that at their own homes anyway. Renting out the space changes nothing, all it does is generate revenue for the city. If you don’t like it, then you should offer the city more money to rent it. Problem solved.

    1. Equality for All says:

      No doubt! Nice comment.

    2. meow says:

Even Letterman is getting death threats from a harmless joke. COME ON !!!

“A frequent contributor to a jihadist website has threatened David Letterman, urging Muslim followers to “cut the tongue” of the late-night host because of a joke the comic made on his CBS show.”

    3. Rick Pikul says:

Other way around: The Post Office will be paying rent to the Islamic center. However that will be after the Islamic center gives a big pile of money to the Post Office.

  4. Just me says:

Boyscouts did not pay rent to be in schools. These guys are paying to lease a public building. Even if they where a white supremacy group it would be legal for them to rent the space.

  5. SSA says:

I’m curious, would these same people also be opposed to a new Catholic church in their community even though some Catholic churches have been involved in sex abuse scandals? Oh, you don’t like it when your religion gets called out, eh? Look, not all Catholics are child molesters and not all Muslims are terrorists. It’s prejudicial to make generalizations about people based on their culture, religion, skin color, etc. Otherwise I guess all white people are members of the KKK. Oh, don’t like that generalization either?

    1. Equality for All says:

      Another excellent comment!

    2. Virginia Yakin says:

This country was founded on Christianity. Why are manager scenes and other signs of Christ banned from the post office and other federal buildings at Christmas? People migrate to the US to become AMERICANS, not set up their former country ‘s principles here and expect hand outs from taxpayers. If they love their country and its principles, why leave? Plymouth authorities have no way to justify renting this building to muslims.

      1. Mythbuster says:

One of the many attacks on our country from the Religious Right is the claim that our country is a Christian Nation…not just that the majority of people are Christians, but that the country itself was founded by Christians, for Christians. However, a little research into American history will show that this statement is a lie. Those people who spread this lie are known as Christian Revisionists. They are attempting to rewrite history, in much the same way as holocaust deniers are. The men responsible for building the foundation of the United States were men of The Enlightenment, not men of Christianity. They were Deists who did not believe the bible was true. They were Freethinkers who relied on their reason, not their faith.

      2. Red Wing Winger says:

“This country was founded on Christianity.”

      3. seriously says:

You are full of it. I’m an American. I’m *NOT* a Christian. I’m also *not* many other things that may be a majority in this land. Does that mean to you that I don’t have a right to practice my own traditions?

      4. Rick Pikul says:

To quote the unanimous position of the US Senate as of 1797, (so they should know what had happened over the previous couple of decades):

“As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion….”

    3. Tom says:

      @ SSA

You make a very good comment. Yes I agree that not all Catholics are bad and not all muslims are bad, but there is that saying that it is always that small group of people who put the BIG STINK on everybody else. But just as you have “Radical Right” in the middle east we have the “Radical Right” in this country. One group of people choose bombing people to make a point and the other group tend to want to rewrite laws to fit their nutty views!

Mulims worship in their own way and the religious right in this country like to jump and down with their arms in the air!

  6. Mike says:

I go to this Post Office daily… and watching this video clip makes me sad that we have so many ignorant people in Plymouth who do now understand the Islam (Muslim) faith. Myself being a 27 year old practicing Catholic understands that Islam is not a religion of terrorists anymore than Christians are terrorists with the likes of Timothy McVeigh, The Unibomber, and the policies of Michelle Bachman (pray away the gay).

Watching the citizens in this clip just makes me see how far as a society we have to go. I hope the Muslim community gets this space, and heaven forbid if a Christian faith based group wanted this space (this wouldn’t even be a discussion point). I also hope that the ignorant people in this clip to not have children so eventually this practice of hatred towards Islam eventually dies off when they do not procreate. God bless America, and please Plymouth do not spread the fear mongering any longer (we have Fox News) and the GOP for this.

    1. Equality for All says:

      LOL, NO DOUBT!

  7. Mike says:

Have we also forgotten about Timothy McVeigh. Pretty sure he was brought up in the Christian faith and look what he did. I am wondering if you have any friends of the Muslim faith. I am guessing not. Muslims didn’t bring down the Twin Towers anymore than Christians blew up the Federal Building in Oklahoma. Lets get real, get educated, and stop spreading fear and hatred in our community.

If only white, home grown, Christians blew up the Twin Towers….would we then go after all of them in our country, or just few it as a bunch of radicals and not a faith based attack. The 19 hi jackers were not Muslim anymore than McVeigh was Christian. Muslim does not teach violence and martyrdom. I hope and pray that one day as a society we can understand each other, and that my friends is how we can honor those lost on 9/11.

    1. Iconoclast says:

Timothy McVeigh did not commit acts of terrorism in the name of Jesus, you total fool.

    2. Funny, funny, funny says:

Oh Mike, that is just beautiful!!! Fool. LOL.

    3. Rico Suave says:

Nice try. Take a look at Europe if you need an example of Muslims gone wild. Go ahead and stick your head in the sand until your business is burned and looted, or your friend or loved one is killed, or your city is destroyed. Tolerance is not always a virtue. Sometimes it’s a symptom of cowardice.

      1. meow says:

For the first time (cringe) I have to agree with Rico Suave on this issue. He is right, Sweden and other parts of Europe are in a state of crisis with new racist hate groups forming. Can you say CULTURE CLASH?

Rico, we usually don’t agree on other topics. The GLBT community isn’t looking like such a threat, is it? (wink wink)

        1. Rico Suave says:

Amen sister! (brother?) Whatever. Doesn’t matter. I knew you’d come around. Just walk toward the light. Lots of things make more sense over here, you’ll see. We can talk GLBT another time. For now I’ll just bask in the afterglow of our unity on this one and wish you a splendid day.

      2. Virginia says:

Agree. Minnesotans 99.9% cowards!! They hide behind Minnesota NICE.

  8. Equality for All says:

Thank you Mr. Breivik. Now take your ignorance and hate filled lunacy and get back to your prison cell.

  9. Mike says:

I am busy reading the bible and discovering how babies heads are crushed against rocks or thrown against spears and women are r a p e d or have their hands cut off. It did convert me though to never step into a damn church again!

  10. USA The Best says:

Muslims are already here. Get used to it 🙂

    1. Jenga says:

Native American #1 says, “Europeans are already here. Get used to it.”

Native American #2 says, “Nope, get them out of here!!!! Don’t trust them, never will!!”

Oh, the hypocrisy of some. So to all European decendents in the USA, we should show some leadership and leave first. Right?

      1. Virginia says:

Why because the native americans weere stupid???European ancestors came here to be Americans, some had to change their names because those who came before them couldn’t spell. They learned the language, worked hard in the coal mines and steel mills for a better life , not looking back. DO NOT KNOCK THE EUROPEANS. They are the GOOD PEOPLE!!

  11. USA The Best says:

If Islam is the religion of the sword, then Christianity is the religion of guns and bombs. Look how six million Jews were slaughtered by the Christian armies in the world war II? How many more millions died in a Christian instigated world war II? 80 million! There is simply no comparison folks.

  12. Angus says:

Sue: They have trained experts who can help you with your paranoid emotions. Please make an appointment to see them immediately! I am afraid you will next start arming yourself with an AK47, couple of shotguns, and full automatic pistols (I know they are illegal but you can still get them) to defend youself.

Perhaps you could get to know various minorities and become friends. Please get out of your white girl conclave and join the rest of us.

    1. Virginia says:

      N E V E R!!!

  13. Angus says:

Wonder how many people know 19 Islamic fire fighters died in the 9/11 attacks? We forget about them

  14. Mark says:

Thank God you are not a real person. I can certainly say that those who would share these views must be extremely hate-filled miserable people, who lead very depressing lives, and can’t find good in anything!

  15. Jenga says:

Hmm, try substituting three things in your analogy. Substitue Europeans for Muslims. Substitute Bible for Koran. Substitute Native Americans’ home for Europe. Now re-read. Sound familiar?

    1. Jenga says:

Forgot to substitute Christianity for Islam. And substitute “in a Church” for “to mecca.”

  16. meow says:

I have to agree with Not A Real Person mainly because the Muslims are a group that doesn’t mix well with other ethnic groups. You have to understand just how extreme and devout these people are in their religious fanaticism.

We as BORN AMERICANS need to stop and FULLY INVESTIGATE their history plus religion to make decisions of weather to give them a footing and levels of power in our community. BE CAREFUL … BE CAUTIOUS

There is something called “Culture Clash” and it’s very real in this world with some very horrible outcomes.

This is a part of how evolution and species integrate or DONT integrate well together. Look into some of the teachings of Howard Bloom who is an expert.

Sometimes restrictions are healthy for a community. We need to realize that some cultures just don’t mix well together. Some do.

  17. meow says:

I am going to sound very racist but I have to agree with ‘the truth’ on this.

Imagine if a KKK group came in and wanted to take up a space next to your kid’s day-care center. What do you think would be the reaction?

Now imagine a group of religious fanatics with not a “long long ago” history of violence but a CURRENT DAY RECENT HISTORY OF VIOLENCE and they want to take residence NEXT TO ONE OF OUR GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS THAT HANDLES OUR MAIL???!!!??? ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MINDS!!!!!??????

  18. What The says:

What happens as the islamic population grows? from,

As long as the Muslim population remains around or under 2% in any given country, they will be for the most part be regarded as a peace-loving minority, and not as a threat to other citizens. This is the case in:

    United States — Muslim 0.6%

    Australia — Muslim 1.5%

    Canada — Muslim 1.9%

    China — Muslim 1.8%

    Italy — Muslim 1.5%

    Norway — Muslim 1.8%

    This continues on the website…

  20. Censoring WCCO says:

  21. Real Talk says:

The differnce is: the teaches of Jehovah and their religion do not fundamentanly conflict with what is traditionally known as American values.

Islamic fundamental teachings DIRECTLY conflict with traditional American values (freedom, equality, liberty, etc.) When you have a religion whose main pilar of fundamental beliefs & teachings is in the the law of Sharia….we have a problem.

So i am not saying all Islamic people are terrorist….but there is a HUGE difference between Islamic faith and the traditional Christain or Jewish faiths. In both content and practice.

We are all so PC and quick to run to the defense of any group….but sometimes, just sometimes….the group deserves the suspicions cast upon them.

  22. gonzo says:

WCCO is a piece of dung. I seriously spent a great deal of time constructing a reasonable comment to this article only to have it censored. It is either this or WCCO buries it out of order. Once again I pose the question, is there some zit faced nerdy git who plays censor to this forum, or does WCCO just let the whackos post for sensation value? Bottom line: WCCO SUCKS

    1. Mr. M says:

Nah, I think it has to do with Word Press and how it combines the comments. But yeah I know also that some overly harsh comments can be removed … there is a “Report comment” feature. I’ve noticed that after a while the comment string ill get all mixed up for some reason and go out of order.

Not all of my comments make it either gonzo. Some do.
