TEHRAN, Iran (AP)— Arab countries Oman and Iraq are involved in negotiations for the release of two Americans jailed in Iran for spying.

A private plane from the Gulf state of Oman has been dispatched to Tehran and an Iraqi official says a delegation of lawmakers is in the Iranian capital amid intensified efforts to seal a $1 million bail-for-freedom deal for Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal.

They were detained along the Iran-Iraq border in July 2009 with their friend Sarah Shourd. She was released last September following mediation by Oman.

Their defense lawyer says talks are under way, but there is no timetable on a possible release.

The Iraqi official spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue.

  2. Ride the camel Clyde says:

These two infidels aren’t worth the pixels it takes to communicate this story. Let them work out the details and the payment themselves.

  3. mark says:

I’d say make them re-pay their million dollar debt by having to do speaking tours on the dangers of hiking in Iraq….oh wait, that’s already common knowledge now isn’t it you stupid idiots

  4. concerned citizen says:

Clyde and Mark- we will all remember are stupid a– comments if and when something unfortunate happens to you. Then you need help. I know I would never go over myself but If you recall, these guys happen to accidentally cross the border AND they were over there working, doing mission work or something. Helping less fortunate people out Morons

    1. mark says:

I might need help in the future but you’ll never find me hiking in a war torn country….if they had been hiking in a non-war zone and got stranded or injured I’m all for helping them out, these idiots weren’t less fortunate they made poor adult choices

      1. jan says:

Haven’t you ever made a poor choice? Everybody does stupid things, even I do stupid things but you shouldn’t have to spend eight years locked up in a cell for walking in the wrong direction.

        1. mark says:

Stupid things? Hiking in Iraq and Iran is beyond stupid, hellooooooo

          1. markH says:

Following your twisted ideas of justice, should you be arrested for going 20 MPH over in a school zone and receive 3 years in prison, we should assume you were treated fairly? After all, those school zones are well posted and you were taught the rules in driver’s ed! I think that perhaps your sadistic and delusional rants are coming from someone who has no idea what he is talking about. Peace.

        2. justsayiin says:

they shouldnt have been hiking there then without proper equipment to assure they would stay on track.

        3. Ride the camel, dufus says:

Mission work? Helping the depraved and the deprived? Oh dear Lord, you are quite mistaken. The three of them were on an adventure of their own design. They were just a group of 70s style free spirits following the wind. They weren’t helping a single soul with anything.

Yeah, a poor choice. What he said – what they did was beyond stupid.

As for taking proper equipment, yeah, like a military ID, an assault rifle, and a brigade of fellow soldiers. Then it might have made some sense.

Otherwise, tough – they can rot over there. And send their buddy Sarah back to join them. She’s a real coward, deserting her “betrothed” like she did.

          1. justsayiin says:

            well said. well said.

    2. There guilty says:

I’m glad they were doing something over there besides being stupid. They should spend the time in Jail and the little Bit ch should go back too.

      1. mark says:

She sure stood by her man’s side huh?

  5. justsayiin says:

if they had any common sense, they would not have been hiking in that area. i mean come on! how dumb and senseless can you be?! last i check hiking through a woods behind my house was just as adventurous and im not stuck in a country battling for my freedom.

    1. mark says:

Finally, someone with clarity on this issue, well said. I just hope these morons have to repay the million bucks, not sure how hippies could do that though

      1. justsayiin says:

i completely agree; but like yu stated, how hippies can come up with such large amnt of money i would have no clue

  6. Mike Hawk says:

I wonder if they would have been convicted if Sarah would have come back to stand trial??? I doubt it. Good going Sarah!!!!
