U Of M Celebrates 100th Anniversary Of Hospital

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The University of Minnesota is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the opening of the first teaching hospital in the state with the dedication of Mayo Plaza, a green space in front of the university's Mayo Building.

The university opened the Elliot Memorial Hospital in 1911, back when the average life expectancy in the United States was 47 years and the leading causes of death were pneumonia and influenza. That old hospital has been remodeled and expanded several times and is now known as the Mayo Building.

On Monday, University President Eric Kaler, the president of Fairview Health Services Mark Eustis and the chief executive of University of Minnesota Physicians Dr. Bobbi Daniels will open Mayo Plaza and present the original brass plaques from the 1911 dedication of the old hospital.
