MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — On Monday, a Target employee will hand deliver a petition demanding the company push back its Black Friday shopping start time.

For the first time, Target says it’ll open its doors at midnight on Black Friday instead of 5 a.m. that morning.

The organizers of the petition say over 175,000 people have signed-on to their cause. They say it’s unfair to ask workers to leave their family Thanksgiving celebrations to arrive at work by 11 p.m.

A previous statement from Target said it’s a competitive shopping day and guests said they’d prefer the earlier shopping hours.

Numerous nationwide retailers, including Toy R Us, Macy’s, Best Buy and Walmart also plan to open at midnight.

This is such a joke. Unemployment levels are higher than they have been in many years, but this guy feels the need to complain about going to work. The fact that he’s even willing to do this suggests this guy doesn’t rank much higher than a cashier. Guess what, clown…you don’t like your job? Fine. There are 200 people behind you who would be ecstatic to be going to work on Thanksgiving morning. Go back to your parents’ basement and smoke your geef, chin strap.

    1. Linnae says:

It’s absolutely ridiculous to ask people to leave their Family celebrations early to go to sleep in order to make it to work that night OR even so early in the morning Friday Everyone deserves to spend time with their families and be thankful! The clowns are the ones out shopping supporting these inconsiderate retailers!

      1. Truth Hurts says:

I agree with the fact that the retail scene on Black Friday has gotten a little out of hand. But that doesn’t mean it’s just corporate greed run amuck. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that this guy is just some poor, innocent victim who’s been asked to make a sacrifice. On the contrary, HE asked TARGET for a job, once upon a time, knowing full well he was applying for a job in retail. He is not special (though I’m sure his mommy and daddy told him he was). At-will employment means just that. You don’t want to work your scheduled hours? There’s the door. You think having a job is a human right? Go to China, they’d love to have you!

        1. jackactionhero says:

Uhh no. He was already granted the day off, to work his FT retail job. He hasn’t been asked to do ANYTHING. He’s doing this to demonstrate his opinion that is against having retail stores open at midnight on Thanksgiving. For you to call him all sorts of names and declare how awful of a person he is, is simply not warranted. Grow up, junior.

          1. AntiTeabagger says:

The guy also has a right to quit of he doesn’t like working for Target. He is an aweful person when people are whining about no jobs and here a guy with a job is whining because he has to work. Welcome to reality.

            1. jackactionhero says:

He’s awful because others don’t have jobs? Why is that his problem? It isn’t my problem others don’t have jobs either.

Sounds like he doesn’t need to quit, because he was granted the day off already, smart guy. He gets to go to his regular FT job instead.

He’s not whining because he has to work. He DOESN’T have to. Did you miss that part in the article, or (more likely) did you not even bother to read it, because you’re more interested in insulting the commenters than commenting on the content?

              You’re a joke.

              1. AntiTeabagger says:

Then why sit and complain about how Target needs to not be open? Yeah, ok, so lets see, lets not be open, therefor, People do not shop at Target those hours, and then Target losses millions of dollars and then has to layoff people because some jackball wanted to tell Target they can’t and should not make money. Do you have your head so far up your arse that you cannot breath o2 JackMeHoff? What part of business model do you not get?

Hey everyone, lets not let the company’s who have the products we want to buy, not sell it to us, because some of the workers do not want to work! Yeah, lets get rid of those workers and put people in those spots who appreciate working.

Not every is special like you Jack

  2. Michele Sailor says:

    I have to agree.
Be thankful that you have a job this Thanksgiving, and if it bothers you that much then quit. There are many people out there looking for a job that I bet would gladly work at 12 am.

    1. jackactionhero says:

And those people were probably beat out for this job by this person anyway. It doesn’t bother the guy “that much” because he doesn’t have to work for Target that night anyway. He’ll be at his other job. (Working) Did you miss that?

      1. AntiTeabagger says:

So why is he complaining if he is the one NOT working. Moron.

  3. Ben says:

If the employee that is delivering the petition is the same one who actually started it, then he doesn’t need to work there anymore. They have already let him off the hook to work that shift anyway. Just shut up already. Be grateful that you have a job (if you still have one after this). A lot of people don’t and would be willing to take your place.

  4. Jerad says:

We’ve gone from the Greatest Generation to the Entitled Generation in just about 50 years. It’s only going to get worse.

    1. Katie says:

Yep – all the way around. But don’t forget the sense of “entitlement” those of us lucky enough to have Thursday & Friday off also feel. We’re entitled enough to expect stores to be open on holidays b/c, for Pete’s sake, we shouldn’t have to plan ahead to fill our cars with gas BEFORE we need to leave, or buy groceries BEFORE the day of the meal … or buy beer on Saturday for the game on Sunday.

I judge THAT entitlement a little more harshly than the “entitlement” of people feeling a little miffed that they’re being told they cannot spend Thanksgiving with their families, as they’ve been able to do every year since the dang holiday was created.

I’m fine with stores opening at 6am (I’d prefer it was 8am) on Black Friday. But requiring employees to come in ON Thanksgiving (or past noon on Dec. 24, or on Christmas Day or the 4th of July or New Year’s Day or New Year’s Eve after 5pm or Easter gosh darn Sunday!) just seems wrong to me.

I’m only 34 – but I do remember when stores were closed on Sundays and were not open AT ALL on holidays. Even grocery stores & gas stations. Granted, I live in small-town MN, but still…I’m just sayin’ … that was a simpler time and in my opinion, a much better time. I shudder to think what Thanksgiving and Christmas will look like when my children are grown, considering how dramatically our country’s values have changed in the last 20-25 years.

      1. jackactionhero says:

        Our country’s values?

Please be specific and detail which ones you’re talking about that have “changed.”

        1. AntiTeabagger says:

Yeah, you have to spell things out for Jack, his 3rd grade education doesn’t allow him to comprehend things of this capacity.

  5. Eric says:

If you don’t want to work Holidays don’t get a job in retail which has its biggest sales day over the hoiday season.

  6. Sue J says:

Is this a joke? There are plenty of people that will work it! Fire them all, after all we are a At Will Work state.

  7. marie says:

The biggest joke is he is not even schuduled to work, just someone wanting there 15 minutes of fame. Only sorry guy sure not many places would want to hire someone like you.

    1. jackactionhero says:

He isn’t looking for any fame, marie. What a brainless comment. You should be embarrassed.

      1. AntiTeabagger says:

Nice grammar jackball, how’s that college degree working out for you Mr. 200K per year?

        1. jackactionhero says:

I mock you openly for your blatant stupidity.

If I could laugh at you right in your face, I would. And loudly.

          1. AntiTeabagger says:

            Nice come back. NOT

  8. The moron news hour says:

In other news, bar tenders, police and fire fighters and cab drivers are petitioning their employers to instute 9 to 5 hours of operation so they can be with their families in the evenings. Democratic lawmakers are said to be giving the measure serious consideration.

  9. me says:

Ok I agree with what many of you are saying…and I realize there are many unemployeed people out there that would be willing to work crazy hours, and after all, this is retail.. However, I don’t think this ecomomy or, the fact that their are a ton of unemployeed people willing to work hours, should give the right for employers and corporations to treat their employee’s in a disrespectful manner. Now I’m not pointing the finger at any corp or retailer this is just a general statement. We may be an At Will state however, the rights of the employees have gotten lost in this economy, and that is said. We should be a Right To Work State PERIOD. Everyone has a right to a job that promotes a healthy enviroment, no matter where they work, no matter what industry. This At Will stuff is unfair to the worker. AT one time we used to enjoy a Right To Work.

    1. Truth Hurts says:

“Disrespectful manner,” huh? Ever read about what job sites used to be like back in the Great Depression era? Target Corp, for one, has done more than any other retailer to provide for their employees and contribute to the community through donations. Target Corp is not the bad guy here. As Jerad said above, people have this sense of entitlement and think they should have a better life just because they want it badly. That’s not how life works; at least not once you leave mommy and daddy’s house. You know what gives you the right to a job that promotes a healty environment? The desire, motivation, and follow-through to obtain and keep a job! Employment is a privilege, not a right.

      1. me says:

AS I said Truth Hurts… I wasn’t pointing the finger at TARGET I love Target…I was making a statement about the way companys treat there employees in general. Especially, the employees that are not at the top. While the CEO’s are at home spending time with the family making millions, the little guy is working his butt off, trying to support his family. please re-read what I said. I never said Target specifically. I have friends that work there and are quite happy. Targe tis a good company…Please make sure you understand what you’re reading before you put words in my mouth or in this case…posting. Also, just because it was a certain way back in the Great Depression, doesn’t make it right now..thats like saying..well we should be thankful it used to be worse..we should be growing as society…comments like that only hold us back.

  10. AntiTeabagger says:

Fire them all and give it to someone who really wants a job, HEY go to the Govt Plaza and give it to all the lazy Occupy bums down there, then they can go home shower and actually be productive in society!

  11. SO SAD says:

The concept of “Thanksgiving” has been lost to the mighty dollar!!!!

  12. Lenny says:

This is insane. If a company thinks they should have a night shift to compete they do it. If you don’t want to work don’t, leave. I worked thanksgiving and christmas as a teen all the time. It was my choice to take the job and I did it because I needed and wanted the money. This worker entitlement attitude is bs. Nobody owes you a job.

  13. Jesus Saves says:

So much for promoting family values. There are certain occupations where you need 24/7 service (police, fire, etc) but Target is not one of them. We watch the breakdown of the American family as the moral degradation of our society continues. God help us all as we slip further into the abyss.

    1. Matt says:

Jesus doesn’t save he causes wars. People can’t agree on which “god” to follow to they start wars. Once people stop and realize how much BS it is they will stop following so blindly

      1. Jesus Saves says:

Jesus doesn’t start wars..money grubbing, self-serving pigs do. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle then it is for a rich man to get into heaven. You blindly follow capitalism which is a false god.

          1. Jesus Saves says:

Didn’t see anywhere where Jesus was out front leading these travesties. In fact I think Jesus said those that live by the sword shall die by the sword and told his true followers to turn the other cheek. I’m pretty sure that Jesus would be on the side of putting families ahead of corporate interests. If our country doesn’t figure this out soon, we shall reap what we sow. In fact, the breakdown of the family has already begun.

            1. Matt says:

You’re just crazy. He doesn’t have to show up to work. He doesn’t have to spend time with his family at 11pm… He isn’t forced to do anything. Go back and read your bible. if capitalism bothers you so much. also if you think about it you only believe in Jesus because your parents told you to. Do you still believe in Santa or the Easter Bunny?

            2. AntiTeabagger says:

Tell Jesus, he can come work the guys shift then, I am sure he would appreciate the night off.

            3. Family says:

The break down of the family started long ago, when society made it impossible to teach our children properly…The disrespectful, spoiled, uncaring, children of will be our leaders of tomorrow…hence the breakdown of familys.

  14. Matt says:

Hopefulyl he is fired on the spot

    1. jackactionhero says:

On what spot? Please be specific.

      1. AntiTeabagger says:

The spot on your moms sheets. Find something to do JackMehoff

  15. Monica says:

I agree, don’t get a job in retail, that has crazy hours for the season to begin with… I have ALWAYS worked retail and so I have always had to go in or stay late at times, it comes with the business.

But now with the economy, it doesnt suprise me at all that retailers will want to do this–HAVE to do this to stay competitive.

If you really want it off, request it off in July or atleast request to work a later shift in July if you have family you would rather be with Thanksgiving night… otherwise just be thankful you have a job.

  16. Deb says:

People have worked on Holidays forever, especially in retail! Get over it!!! This guy comes from the same generation that expects nap time and clowns with balloons on Friday’s. get over it and get to work!!

  17. Happy Target Employee says:

I work for a Target store here in the North-East Metro and I enjoy my job. I love helping our guests and I find my co-workers pleasant and refreshing. I requested to work the overnight Thanksgiving day into Black Friday and will be there. I don’t understand what this young man is attempting to do other than to show that he is not as excited to be a Target employee in retail as some are. I thank God for this job.

    1. jackactionhero says:

Thank whoever hired you. Your god isn’t a Target shareholder.

  18. djp says:

I heard this guy wasn’t even schedule to work at Target on Black Friday..that he had asked for the day off to work at ANOTHER store???
Either way…he is an idiot! He KNEW about retail hours when he applied for and TOOK the position. Stop whining and be an adult!!

    1. jackactionhero says:

      He isn’t whining.

I’d say anybody working 2 jobs is on their way to being an adult, if they aren’t one already.

But to you, he’s an idiot. LOL

      1. Desert Eagle .50 says:

And to all of us, you are an idiot, as you prove it every day here.

        1. jackactionhero says:

Wow, brilliant. Too bad your opinion is still not respected.

          You are dismissed.

          1. AntiTeabagger says:

And either are you. With your raging antics.

  19. Shoppin' til I drop says:

Not everyone celebrates Thanksgiving, or have the money to celebrate. Quit complaining about having to work on holidays. It’s retail, what did you expect! Now, let me shop in peace this Thanksgiving without having to get up at 2-3am to wait in line!!

  20. tonkahlm says:

Wow – all of you are so off the mark. Why is it ok for these conglomerations to take more time away from employees AND SHOPPERS families!!!!! Have you even thought about all the people who now have to cut their evening short with family to get in line for the best deals because they are also suffering in this economy?

  21. apt221bbakerst says:

I have to agree with most of the critics here. Yes, it is unfeeling and unfair to ask employees to come in on Thanksgiving to work and especially at 12 a.m. But there is alot of people out their who are desperately looking for any type of work and would gladly take these complainers position and these corporations know that and will use that to the best of their advantage. Stores no longer care about their employees. They are in for the profit and the Christmas holidays are their big money maker. If the employees belly ache about the hours, they are easy to replace. The thing is most people who feel secure in their jobs are not looking outside their door and seeing the desperate people who have no jobs, some no homes and are stuffering. People in these secure positions think 14+ million people are just being lazy so they feel secure to complain about working conditions. Businesses love the unemployment situation because they can use that on their employees to keep them in line. The world is a very scarey place right now and my sugguestion to the employees who complain about working these weird hours is to keep your mouth shut and do your job. You do not want to be unemployed especially right now.

    1. jackactionhero says:

“But there is alot of people out their who are desperately looking for any type of work and would gladly take these complainers position”

Show me the throngs of people who are applying for these positions but aren’t getting hired.

  22. SO SAD says:

Why not take all holidays away and have everyone be opened 24/7. This way you can shop anytime you want and don’t have to worry about your fellow man. This is what corporate America wants, because, you know folks, they’re the ones who do the hiring! NOT!!!!

    1. me says:

It’s all about corporate greed…period…in a failing ecomony it’s about inflating more sales to inflate CEO pay, rather than increase sales and use the profits to hire more people. We have become a GREEDY society…here in America…in Europe..in China…The planet earth is one big pile of greed.

      1. Matt says:

Look at it this way. opening at midnight is creating more hours for employees which equals more jobs. If this guy doesn’t want to work at midnight he can quit, there are others who are willing to work.

  23. Antipeople says:

With all these great black friday specials, how many are made in America? My guess is it’s all going to the Chinese.

  24. andrew says:

I think it is crazy for people to complain about working a holiday. Their are lot of people that have to work every single holiday of the year. For one look at the people that work at the airport. You have hundreds of people that work their on this thanksgiving you don’t think they would want to be home with their family. I think the people should be happy to have job. What about are soldiers don’t you think they would want to be home with their family but instead they are protecting our freedom..

  25. lori says:

wow this whole topic is a little humorous if you think about it. Retail stores have always had employees working on holidays (whether they are open or not, how do you think those displays and sales get set up) which anyone applying in the retail market is well aware of. Why are you now so outraged at one retailer. People say it is about spending time with their families, well okay but I don’t hear any outrage for the thousands of others that work every holiday. People like the police, fire, medical personnel, TV & media, restaurants, movie theaters, bowling alleys, resorts, spas, hotels, airlines, trains, buses, sporting events, and more. What do you do on your holiday, travel, go out to eat, watch TV, go to a movie, what about all those people that make your Holiday time possible, I don’t hear your outrage at airlines being open on a holiday—makes you think doesn’t it. It would be nice if nobody every had to work on a holiday and if life was perfect, but then wouldn’t we all be bored. Just a thought!
