Simulator Aims To Curb Text-And-Drive In Minn.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — For the sake of teaching people not to, traffic safety advocates are encouraging texting and driving in a special simulator that shows how dangerous it is.

In conjunction with "Distraction Free Driving Day" proclaimed by Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton, phone giant AT&T is bringing a simulator to Eden Prairies that illustrates the risks of texting behind the wheel.

Participants wear specialized goggles to simulate a moving vehicle and are prompted to look down at various points to send text messages. It records slowed reaction time or traffic infractions to show how even a few seconds of looking away can cause problems.

Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Secretary of State Mark Ritchie were among those scheduled to take part in Saturday morning's event.
