MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities say a 29-year-old Wisconsin man was killed Monday afternoon when his car hit a tree in western Wisconsin, according to the St. Croix County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities responded to the accident at about 3:26 p.m. Monday on County Highway G about a quarter mile east of 290th Street in Glenwood, Wis. Authorities say a 1995 Ford truck was traveling westbound on County Highway G when it went into the south ditch and went about 100 yards before hitting a tree.

The man had to be extricated from the cab of the truck and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified by the St. Croix County Medical Examiner as Steven J. Berends of Prairie Farm, Wis. Authorities said Berends was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

Authorities said it's the ninth fatal accident in the state.
