Settlement In LeSueur Co. Deputy's Fatal Shooting Of Man

KASOTA, Minn. (WCCO) -- There's now a settlement in the case of a LeSueur County Sheriff's Deputy who shot and killed a man wearing only a swimsuit.

The family of the man who died, Tyler Heilman, will get $750,000.

In 2009, Heilman and LeSueur County Deputy Todd Waldron wrestled after Heilman was asked for his license. Witnesses said Heilman had Waldron in a headlock and was choking him when Waldron grabbed his gun and shot Heilman four times.

Witnesses say Waldron never said he was a deputy and he was not in uniform.

The deputy was cleared by grand jury of any criminal wrongdoing. However, Heilman's father filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the deputy and the county.

The county decided to settle the wrongful death lawsuit to avoid the expense of a long trial.
