Get Ready For Some Major Traffic On 694 Monday

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Get ready for some major traffic trouble Monday. That's when a five-month road project begins on Interstate 694 -- one of the busiest roadways in the north metro.

Starting Monday, drivers will face 24-hour lane closures between Highway 252 and Interstate 35W.

That's on top of work already underway on I-694 -- from 35W to Highway 10.

That brings it up to a total of 10 miles of busy roadway under construction.

"People should give themselves plenty of time to get to work, and make sure your car is in good condition, because all it takes is one situation and it can snarl it up even more," MnDOT spokesman Kent Barnard said.

I-694 will be reduced to a single lane in each direction between East River Road and Highway 10 in Brooklyn Center starting Sunday night. A temporary lane will be added, however, so that there will be two lanes between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. daily.

"It's going to be a major challenge for motorists, and there's going to be major congestion throughout this project," he said.

To try to ease the commute, Maple Grove Transit is adding more buses to their schedule in hopes of helping commuters get to their jobs in downtown Minneapolis on time.
