DNR: Boat Patrols Will Be Out Weekend Before The Fourth

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) – If you're going to be out on a lake this weekend, officials with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said you better have a sober driver on your boat.

The DNR said extra patrols will be out on Minnesota lakes this weekend for the coming Fourth of July holiday. Boating While Intoxicated enforcement will increase as officials said it's one of the leading factors for boating accidents and injuries in Minnesota. Officials said in 2012, alcohol was a contributing factor in about 33 percent of the deadly boating accidents in Minnesota.

The BWI enforcement is part of Operation Dry Water, a national effort to reduce alcohol and drug-related incidents and fatalities involving boats.
