Man Gets 90 Days In Connection To March Hit-And-Run

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 27-year-old man was sentenced Monday to 90 days in jail after pleading guilty to a March hit-and-run that fatally injured a bicyclist.

Juan Hernandez-Campoceco pleaded guilty in May to one felony hit-and-run charge and one misdemeanor DWI charge. The charges stemmed from an incident that killed 28-year old Elyse Mary Stern.

According to police, Stern went through a red light near Lake Street and Cedar Avenue and was hit by Hernandez-Campoceco.

Hernandez-Campoceco admitted to police that he hit Stern when he was pulled over, just blocks away from the scene. He blamed his two passengers for urging him not to call for help.

Hernandez Campoceco has been in jail on an immigration hold and is expected to be deported to Guatemala.
