81 Sickened By Guinea Pig Meat At Ecuadorian Fest

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Minnesota health officials are investigating after dozens of people fell sick at an Ecuadorian festival in Minneapolis earlier this month.

At least 81 people have been hospitalized for severe gastrointestinal symptoms after eating guinea pig meat served by one of the festival's vendors.

The Minnesota Department of Health said many of those people tested positive for salmonella poisoning.

Officials have not identified the vendor.

The August 11 festival was in celebration of Ecuadorian Independence Day. It took place at the New York Plaza Produce on the 1300 block of East Lake Street.
