Behind The Scenes Of The New St. Croix River Bridge

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- WCCO had a chance to go behind the scenes for a look at a really important part of the new St. Croix River Bridge.

Construction crews showed us how they're making more than 300 segments of the bridge out of concrete.

The segments will become the driving surface of the bridge approach on the Minnesota side.

They're being made very close to where they'll go into place. And St. Croix Crossing Project Director Jon Chiglo says that's a good thing, considering some of the difficulties crews have been dealing with.

"With the depth of the river and the depth of the muck, the size of spans and uniqueness of the structure has presented some challenges," Chiglo said. "But nothing we're not uncomfortable with and how we solved it."

The St. Croix Crossing is scheduled to open in the fall of 2016.
