Judge Dismisses Minnesota Wrongful Death Lawsuit

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A federal judge has dismissed a wrongful death lawsuit against a Brooklyn Center police officer who shot and killed a man during a traffic stop.

U.S. District Court Judge David Doty ruled Monday that Officer Ryan Soliday was justified in using deadly force against 24-year-old Edmond Fair in August 2013. Court documents say Fair fought off Soliday and his partner when they tried to handcuff him. They say he grabbed one of their Tasers and shocked them both before Soliday shot him.

Soliday told authorities he saw Fair reach for his partner's gun. The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office investigated and a grand jury decided not to charge Soliday.

Fair's mother filed the lawsuit. Minnesota Public Radio couldn't reach her for comment Monday.
