Bjorn Broman Is State's Leading Scorer – By A Long Shot

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- He's the state's leading scorer and it's not even close.

Bjorn Broman is averaging 50 -- 50 points a game -- this season.

"I just want to get wins," Broman said. "And whatever my role is on the team, I'll do."

His team is Lakeview Christian in Duluth, and his team's offense is centered around him. Why wouldn't it be when he's as prolific as he is?

"He's absolutely an exceptional player," coach Jeremy Uecker said. "He's a very special player. There's no doubt about it. And we like having the ball in his hands."

How's a guy score 50 points a game? It has a lot to do with what he does outside of games. Six days a week, Broman shoots until he's made 300 - 400 shots. He says it takes him about an hour. That's a made shot, every nine seconds, for an hour straight, six days a week.

No wonder the kid can pour 'em in.

"My dad always comes and helps rebound," Broman said. "Sacrifices his lunch break for it."

Basketball has always been a family thing for the Bromans. So is scoring lots of points. His big brother, Anders, is the unofficial all-time leading scorer in Minnesota history with more than 5,000 points.

"He'll stay a leader for I'm sure a long time," Bjorn said. "But I'm always trying to chase him, always trying to reach some of the records he had."

Bjorn's not gonna catch his big brother, but he is closing the gap. He's now seventh on the state's all-time scoring list, and climbing.

Never discount the effectiveness of trying to measure up to your big brother, when it comes to motivation.

"Yeah," Bjorn said. "I just wanted to be like him."

But would you believe me if I told you that the most impressive thing about the kid isn't that he scores 50 points a game?

It's that the kid who scores 50 points a game is nearing the state record for assists.

"He's just such an exceptional passer as well, that if a defense focuses too much on him, he'll make 'em pay," Uecker said.

Which Broman doesn't mind.

"If they're putting a lot of guys on me or focusing all their attention on me, I'm going to find the open guy for a layup," he said.

And since you can't focus all your all your attention on him, that's a big reason why he can score those 50 points a game.

"If they allow him to score 50, he'll score 50," Uecker said. "And if they focus more resources on shutting him down, then maybe he'll end up with 14 assists in a game."

Either way, Broman is happy.

"If scoring comes, it comes," he said. "But I just want to get wins, that's the most important to me."
