Patrol: 2 Dead Following 2 Broadside Crashes

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The State Patrol says that two fatal crashes happened Saturday on Minnesota roads.

The first happened just after noon in Sherburne County at the intersection of Highway 10 and Upland Avenue.

The patrol says a Chevy pickup, driven by 18-year-old Steffen Salfrank, of Elk River, ran a stop light on the highway's westbound lane and broadsided a Nissan Altima driven by 63-year-old Daniel Vaughn, also of Elk River.

Vaughn died at the scene.

The second crash happened shortly after 9:30 p.m. in Aitkin County in northern Minnesota at the intersection of Highway 18 and Highway 65.

The patrol says a Volkswagen Jetta, driven by 29-year-old Peter Sarkisyan, of Forest Lake, was going west on Highway 18 and failed to stop at a stop sign and broadsided a Ford Fiesta driven by 47-year-old Anthony Sundholm, of McGrath.

Sundholm died, officials said. Sarkisyan suffered serious injuries.

Road conditions in both crashes were listed as dry.
