Fashion Designer Reinvents Line Of Yoplait Yogurt

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- You may have noticed new packaging on your favorite flavor of yogurt.

Minnesota-based Yoplait yogurt enlisted the help of Minnesota fashion designer Christopher Straub to re-imagine the cups with a Signature Collection offered exclusively in Target stores.

Straub takes us behind the scenes to show us how fashion and food intersect.

"My goal as an artist is to bridge between fashion and art and that's what I try to do with the items I put down the runway," Straub said.

Straub used that same concept to create a limited-edition collection for Yoplait and Yoplait Light. The designer, most well-known from his work on Project Runway, combined textural techniques with fun images to celebrate the six signature flavors.

"This is the dress that inspired the blueberry patch cup. Lots of petals over and over again," Straub said. "We could visually translate that into a two dimensional medium and turn them into these Yoplait signature cups."

"This strawberry girl has such an attitude. She's fun and she's frilly and she's fringy and we modified the dress visually to look good on the cup so the cup has those little fringe moments at the bottom," Straub said. "So it was just like taking my art, flattening it and putting it on a cup."

Andrew Lainsbury with Yoplait said the cups are designed to be attention getting and help shoppers select their own unique style.

"The idea of selecting a snack is very similar, selecting the clothes you might put on. It invites people to celebrate their style with a snack that actually makes a statement."

Each cup in the collection, found only in Target, is styled by Straub.

The collection is available at Target Stores through February, to coincide with New York's fashion week. Yoplait invites customers to be part of the conversation on social media by using a hashtag #YoplaitStyle.
