Presidents Day: What's Open, What's Closed?

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Monday marks Presidents Day, and while many people will still be going to work, a number of offices such as the U.S. Post Office are closed for the federal holiday.

Some schools are also closed.

Most parking meters are free in Minneapolis and St. Paul, although meters at the University of Minnesota and at some city parks may be enforced.

Metro Transit will be running buses and light rail on regular schedules, and most malls and non-governmental businesses will be open. For many stores, Presidents Day is an opportunity to hold big sales.

Presidents Day was originally marked to honor George Washington's birthday -- which is on Feb. 22 -- but was eventually moved to the third Monday in February as part of the 1971 Uniform Monday Holiday Act.
