MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Teenagers are not getting enough sleep according to a recent study.

Dr. Louis Kazaglis is a sleep medicine physician at Hennepin County Medical Center.

He says teens who are sleep deprived are more likely to get in car accidents, and are prone to depression, academic problems, substance abuse and weight gain.

There are some steps parents can take.

“Having a TV in the room, or allowing kids to have computers or PDAs in the room decreases their sleep time, so the first rule of thumb is to get those things out,” Kazaglis said

The study found 72 percent of 15-year-olds reported getting seven hours a night in 1991.

By 2012, 63 percent of adolescents in the same age group reported regularly receiving seven or more hours of sleep per night.

The National Sleep Foundation recommends nine hours per night.
