It Ain't Snow-ver 'Til The Fat Lady Sings

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The snow fell fast and furious Sunday evening -- especially in south Twin Cities metro area, where a widespread 6 to 10 inches of heavy, wet snow accumulated across Carver, Scott and Dakota counties.

The highest event total came from nearby Goodhue County, with 12.3 inches of snow in Zumbrota.

According to the position of the sun's most direct rays and to our unbridled readiness for sunshine and 70s, the spring season has arrived. Yet March snow is anything but uncommon.

In the Twin Cities, March is our third-snowiest month climatologically, with a normal snowfall total of a not too shabby 10.3 inches.

Sounds of shoveling Monday contradict the overall theme of this snow season: sparse. Sunday and early Monday's total 3.6 inches of snow at MSP represents one of biggest snowfalls of this lackluster season, brings the seasonal tally to 30.8 inches.

If no more measurable flakes fly, the winter of 2014-15 will rank in the top 30 least snowy on record.

But if I were a betting gal, I'd say the odds are in favor of more snow. In the Twin Cities, we've had only six Aprils since 1885 that passed without at least a trace of snow -- in 1895, 1915, 1925, 1930, 1976, and in 2010.

And it was only two seasons ago that we plowed through the third-snowiest April on record. In 2013, 17.9 inches of snow fell.

Though more snow is likely in our future, spring is indeed a season of transition. Thunder in the month of March has been reported at MSP in the last four of five years.

To close on a cheerful tidbit, the average date of our first 70-degree day in the Metro is April 13. So, get out your snow boots, shorts and T-shirts, umbrellas, sunglasses, sunscreen and shovels and enjoy spring!
