Cat Rescued From Iowa River Getting New Home In Minnesota

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — A cat rescued from a northern Iowa river has found a new home in Minnesota.

The Humane Society of North Iowa says Ken Avery, of St. Paul, Minnesota, had learned about Winnie's brush with death and decided she was the right cat to replace a longtime feline companion that had died of cancer.

Winnie was given the name because she'd been inside a duffel bag tossed by a man into the Winnebago River near a Mason City bridge on March 21. A couple witnessed what happened and soon retrieved the bag. Inside was the adult calico. The man has been charged with misdemeanor animal torture.

Humane Society executive director Sybil Soukup says Winnie "survived her horrific ordeal and is now getting a second chance at a happy ending."
