MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A Megabus headed to Minneapolis from Chicago had to make an unexpected stop Tuesday night after passengers said a man fired gunshots in the restroom.
The incident happened along Interstate 90 near a tollway oasis in suburban Des Plaines at about 11:30 p.m. A passenger tackled the suspect until police could get to the scene.
The bus was scheduled to arrive in Minneapolis around 7 a.m. Wednesday. The unruly suspect caused quite the delay and the bus finally reached its final destination shortly after 9 a.m.
One passenger and witness, Kenneth Smith, was aboard the bus headed to Minneapolis to see his family.
“[The suspect] kept pulling [the driver] all aggressively, he got hostile with me,” Smith said. “I ordered him to go upstairs. He went to the bathroom, and we heard a pop.”
After that, the suspect left the bathroom, making his way back toward the driver.
“He came back out, started charging at the driver, and that’s when I rushed him,” Smith said.
Police arrived about 15 minutes later.
A witness said the gun fell out of the suspect’s hand when he was tackled.
Illinois state police are handling the case.
No one on the bus was injured in the incident.
