MnDOT Closing I-94 Over The Weekend

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - More detours are in store for people traveling between Minneapolis and St. Paul.

I-94 just shut down in both directions for the weekend.

The closure is in effect between Highway 280 and I-35E. Interstate 94 will remain closed until Monday morning at 5 a.m.

MnDOT crews will be taking down the bridge deck, or driving surface, of the Snelling Avenue bridge that spans I-94.

Motorists should follow the posted detour using I-35E, I-694, I-35W and Highway 280 to bypass the closure.

The same five-mile stretch of I-94 was closed last month to remove power lines.

MnDOT wants people to pay attention because this weekend's detours are different. I-35E and Highway 36 have more ramp closures than last month.

"We don't want to detour someone where they won't be able to get any further," MnDOT spokesperson Kirsten Klein said. "So we're a little bit further out in taking them all the way up to 694."

If crews finish early, I-94 will reopen before 5 a.m. Monday morning.
