Scientists To Discuss Plastic Challenge In Great Lakes

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Scientists specializing in the Great Lakes are going to be hearing about the challenge plastic pollution poses for the lakes during a conference at the University of Vermont.

The Thursday sessions on plastics pollution is one of many being held this week in Burlington at the 58th Annual Conference on Great Lakes Research.

The conference is focusing on a variety of topics affecting the great lakes of the world, not just the five Great Lakes of North America.

Sherri Mason, a chemistry professor at the State University of New York at Fredonia, is leading the Thursday sessions on plastics pollution.

She says the danger of plastics was first recognized several years ago. She says plastic pollution brings together many other challenges such as invasive species and chemical pollution.
