MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Choosing the best cookie in Minnesota is no easy feat. With hundreds of bakeries across the state, there are no shortage recipes and favorites.
But there can only be one Best of Minnesota, and your votes sent me to Alexandria for some fun at the Sugar Shack.READ MORE: 'I Would Take A Drawing On A Napkin': Chief Arradondo Says No Elected Official Has Spoken With Him About The Public Safety Ballot Question
This place can satisfy any sweet tooth.
“We have cookies, candy, fudge, ice cream. It’s just a fun place for kids and families,” owner Tracy Ford said.
Which is why it is no surprise they are home to the best cookie in the state.
“They are really good,” customer Shannon Chan said. “They are kind of like what Grandma makes I would say, you know.”
Right on Broadway Street in downtown Alexandria, the Sugar Shack is a throwback candy store.
“I’ve got chocolate sea salt caramel, monster, s’mores,” Ford said.READ MORE: Woman Killed, Man Severely Injured In Home Explosion Near Lake Vermillion
Ford was a stay-at-home mother for 17 years. During that time, she came up with what would be her signature item — the cookie bouquet. Instead of flowers, you send cookies, and Ford has one for every occasion.
“It started as a hobby, making the cookies on a stick for bake sales, and it kind of grew from there,” she said.
The best part? They are all homemade and hand decorated.
“She is truly an artist,” April Schaack, Ford’s sister, said. “Whenever I had an art project I needed for school, she would do it for me.”
Finally in the kitchen with Ford, I tried my hardest to figure out why her cookies are the Best of Minnesota — but she was not willing to reveal her secrets!
The Sugar Shack is open Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. They do custom cookie orders year round, and Ford can create just about any character or shape.
