Man Fatally Shot After Stabbing K9 In Roseville, Officers On Leave
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Five Roseville Police officers are on leave after shooting a man who stabbed a K9 officer during an altercation Wednesday night.
According to Roseville Police Chief Rick Mathwig, just before 10 p.m. officers responded to a call of a disturbance at a Roseville apartment located on the 1600 block of West County Road B.
Neighbors in the apartment complex called the police after they heard loud banging and thumping from a third floor apartment. They told police they were concerned someone was being assaulted.
Upon arrival, police made contact with a man inside the apartment.
Officers said the man responded when they first called out, then he went silent. After several more attempts to make contact with him, the police forced their way inside the third floor apartment.
Five officers and a K9 officer searched the apartment. They came upon the man hiding in a closet with a large kitchen knife.
According to police, the man stabbed the K9 in the jaw with the kitchen knife. Police then shot and killed him.
The 52-year-old man lived by himself and had a history of mental illness. Police said they had dealt with him in the past.
No one else was in the apartment.
The K9 is expected to recover. He was treated at the U of M veterinary hospital for the wound.
None of the five officers were injured. They have all been placed on standard paid leave.
The BCA is currently investigating the incident.
