Evacuation Lifted In Callaway After Train-Tanker Collision
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Residents of a northwestern Minnesota town are returning to their homes after a freight train collided with a propane truck Thursday.
Crews in Callaway have been on the scene of a collision between the train and truck for more than 17 hours. More than 15 different departments have responded. The incident prompted an evacuation of the town.
First, they were fighting flames from when the train hit the propane truck. Then around 10:30 p.m. Thursday, the large propane tanker exploded.
It was carrying 10,000 gallons of propane when it was hit by the train.
Crews have been dousing the tanker trying to keep it cool as the propane burns off.
No one was injured in the explosion. But two members of the Canadian Pacific Rail crew suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash.
The evacuation was lifted at 10 a.m. Friday and all roads are now opened. The railroad also reopened to train traffic at 9 a.m.
Highway 59 will remain closed between County Highway 14 and County Highway 26 until further notice.
It is not clear what lead to the crash. However, Canadian Pacific officials said the train crew did sound the horn as the train approached the crossing.
Callaway is about 50 miles east of Fargo.
