Flip Saunders Missing From ESPY Tribute Video
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- ESPN's yearly awards show was held this week and aired Wednesday night.
The Wednesday after the Major League Baseball All-Star Game is traditionally one of the slowest sports times of the year with nothing major in action. So with that, ESPN held is ESPY (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly) Awards.
A fixture of the night is a video tribute to athletes, coaches and figures in sports that have died in the last year. Featured in the video were Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt and boxing great Muhammad Ali, but one notable face was missing: Flip Saunders.
Saunders died last October after a battle with Hodgkins Lymphoma.
When the Timberwolves held their home opener last November, there was a 20-minute tribute video to honor the life and legacy Saunders left behind.
When the ESPY Awards aired their video, Saunders was not shown, at least not on the television broadcast. Officials say he was included in the video, but for unknown reasons it was not shown during the TV broadcast.
Saunders, in between coaching stints in the NBA, served as a basketball analyst for ESPN.
