Netflix: 'Making A Murderer' Isn't Over Yet
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Miss binge-watching "Making a Murderer"? Well, Netflix says more on the Wisconsin true-crime/criminal justice story is on the way.
The internet streaming service announced Tuesday that directors Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos are in production of new episodes, which will focus on the post-conviction process for Steven Avery and Brenden Dassey.
The original series focused on the trials of Avery and Dassey in the killing of a 25-year-old photographer in Manitowoc County. The series was mega-popular, and raised questions on the criminal justice system in the United States.
Netflix says the new episodes will focus on the new legal teams of Avery and Dassey, who were both sentenced to life in prison. The lawyers in Avery's prior legal team, Dean Strang and Jerry Buting, became instant stars following the release of the 10-episode original series.
Now, Avery's lawyer is Kathleen T. Zellner, of Chicago. She has won exonerations for 16 of her previous clients.
Avery, as it happens, was also exonerated earlier in his life after he spent 18 years in prison on a rape and attempted murder conviction which DNA evidence helped overturn.
Netflix has not given a release date for the new episodes. It's also unknown how many of them there will be.
The original series lasted 10 episodes and took a decade to produce.
