MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – An apartment building in downtown Minneapolis went up in flames Sunday afternoon.

“I was about to enter my car and I heard an explosion. I looked around and I noticed smoke coming from the apartment building right there,” witness Rome Kidd said.

Minneapolis firefighters say the fire broke out on the 200 block of 9th Street South at around 2 p.m. It happened on the third floor.

We talked to a man whose girlfriend lives in one of the damaged units. She was not inside when it happened. The two were just getting ready to move in together.

“We grabbed her bed and some other stuff and were supposed to come back today after work and now there’s nothing,” Greg Davis said.

Firefighters say no injuries were reported, but there is a lot of damage to the building. The cause is still under investigation.

Officials with the Minneapolis Fire Department say no injuries were reported. Officials with the American Red Cross say 19 units were damaged or affected by the fire. They say about two dozen residents are displaced as a result.
