Minneapolis Closing Downtown Streets To Reduce Weekend Traffic

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – If you're headed to a Halloween party in downtown Minneapolis this weekend, know that some streets will be closed to regular traffic in the Warehouse District.

Only Ubers, taxis and limos will be allowed in an area between South 3rd Street and North 6th Street and North 1st Avenue and Hennepin Avenue. The closures will take place both Friday and Saturday night, from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m.

Police say the road closures will improve the traffic situation outside the bars and restaurants in the area and reduce crime around closing time.

"This traffic mobility plan is going to contribute to our overall public safety strategy," said 1st Precinct Inspector Mike Sullivan, with Minneapolis police. "The added licensing inspectors, the added traffic control agents is going to allow our officers to do more police work, so to speak."

During this new traffic configuration, there will be access points to allow for taxis, Ubers, Lyfts, limos, and buses.

Food trucks will also be part of the program, offering late-night food options to people in the Warehouse District.
