Wisconsin Conservatives Back Away From Rumors Of Redistricting

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A leading conservative attorney says he has never heard anyone in the Legislature say there were plans to circumvent Democratic Gov. Tony Evers to enact redistricting without his approval.

The comment Tuesday from Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty leader Rick Esenberg comes a day after he was quoted in a story by the liberal online publication Wisconsin Examiner as saying he had heard about a plan by Republicans to pass a joint resolution on redistricting, rather than a bill.

Passing a resolution does not require the governor's signature.

Esenberg says that while he had heard of the legal idea, any suggestion that he had heard about a Republican plan to do that was incorrect.

Republican legislative leaders say they are not discussing such an idea, but they haven't ruled out pursuing it in the future.
